The Costa Brava (meaning wild coast) is a 160-kilometre stretch of coastline running from Blanes, north of Barcelona, to the French border. Blanes is a popular destination for Spanish holidaymakers as well as international tourists. It is a quieter resort than some of its neighbours up the coast, but being the closest to Barcelona it is the easiest resort to get to on the Costa Brava to get to, being just over an hour’s taxi transfer from Barcelona airport.
Heading north you arrive at Lloret de Mar with its excellent beaches and lively nightlife. Lloret de Mar has traditionally been the focal point for mainly British tourists looking for a holiday of sun, sand and sangria on the Costa Brava. Airport transfers from Barcelona airport to Lloret de Mar take around one and a half hours.
Further up the coast you arrive at Tossa de Mar, an ancient fisherman’s village, which still retains a great deal of character despite the influx of foreign visitors. With its narrow cobbled streets and Spanish charm, you’ll love wandering the streets when you want to escape the beautiful beach for a while. For a more cultural experience head to Figueres, home of the world-famous Salvador Dali Museum. The capital of the Costa Brava, Girona, is also worth a visit. It is a walled city and boasts a magnificent 13th-century cathedral and a much-visited Jewish Quarter. Both Girona and Figures are between 1-5 and 2 hours by taxi transfer from Barcelona airport.
In between Barcelona and Blanes is a less well-known stretch of coastline, but well worth a visit and being close to Barcelona, makes it extremely convenient to get to. Known as the Costa Maresme, holiday companies often refer to the resorts being on the Costa Brava. The main resorts are Calella de la Costa, Malgrat and Santa Susanna. Like the Costa Brava, it is the golden sands and azure sea that draws tourists to the Costa Maresme. All the resorts on this coast offer a lively combination of beach life and nightlife and taxi transfers to the Costa Maresme take around one hour.
Head south from Barcelona you will hit the Costa Dorada (meaning golden coast). As its name suggests, this is a beautiful stretch of coastline with more than 200km of golden sands. With Barcelona airport situated south of the city, the Costa Dorada is particularly convenient to get to.

Further down the coast you reach Tarragona. Tarragona draws tourists in search of culture as well as a suntan. Having been an important outpost of the Roman Empire, Tarragona has some impressive Roman ruins, which were declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. As well as some fine beaches, there are a number of fine museums in the town and, thanks to a thriving fishing industry, there are some excellent fish restaurants to be found.
