Malaga was the birthplace of Pablo Picasso but tourists flock to the city in their droves not as much for art history than for its Mediterranean climate and its proximity to the Costa del Sol. Whilst Malaga is worth a visit alone, Malaga airport is convenient for many great beach resorts. An airport taxi transfer from Malaga airport will quickly get you to the beach and soaking up the rays, so that you don’t waste any of your precious time away. Heading west out of Malaga the first major beach resort you come across is the original Costa del Sol resort, Torremolinos. Originally developed for tourists back in the 1960s, Torremolinos is still extremely popular with holidaymakers and has a great deal to offer to the 21st-century traveller. Due to its proximity to Malaga airport, taxi transfers to Torremolinos are extremely cost-effective and the journey takes around 15 minutes.
Continuing west, Torremolinos’s less well-known neighbour Benalmadena is an equally popular resort, and, having developed later in life, it has managed to avoid too many of the concrete high-rises which litter other resorts developed in the ’60s. Benalmadena is split into two sections: the beachfront of Benalmadena Costa and the old town of Benalmadena Pueblo. With its stylish marina, beautiful beaches and great tapas bars, Benalmadena Costa is the focus for tourists, although a venture into Benalmadena Pueblo will perhaps offer up a more authentic Spanish experience. Like Torremolinos, Benalmadena is an extremely easy resort to get to from Malaga airport. Airport taxi transfers take around 20 minutes, making Benalmadena a very convenient resort for weekend breaks in the sun.
Just slightly further along the coast you come across Fuengirola: just a 30-minute taxi transfer from Malaga Airport. Fuengirola is a buzzing cosmopolitan town with 7km of sandy beaches. Adjoining to the west, but technically separate, Mijas Costa is a lively combination of sun, sand and water sports. Nearby is the largest golf complex in Spain. La Cala Resort boasts no less than 3 full golf courses.
Further west still you come across Calahonda, a modern resort very popular with British tourists. Calahonda has the usual compliment of sun-drenched beaches and golf courses that one can expect from a Costa del Sol resort. It’s not the most perfect resort for history buffs, but if you’re after convenient facilities, sun and fun then Calahonda will tick all your boxes.
Situated between Calahonda and Marbella, Elviria has long been a popular holiday resort and is home to the five-star Don Carlos Hotel. Taxi transfers to Calahonda and Elviria from Malaga airport take around 30 minutes, so you’ll have a Margarita in your hand and the sand between your toes in no time!
The luxurious resort town of Marbella is situated right at the heart of the Costa del Sol, and is one of the most prominent resorts on the whole Costa del Sol. Marbella is around a 45-minute taxi transfer from Malaga Airport set against the spectacular backdrop of the Sierra Blanca Mountains. With 25km of golden coastline it is no surprise that Marbella is described as Spain’s answer to San Tropez. There’s an endless supply of top-class restaurants and luxury hotels complexes. The town is a playground for the rich and famous, especially those that like golf.
There are around a dozen golf courses within putting distance of Marbella and more than 40 in the Costa del Sol. With around 300 days of sunshine a year and one of the highest concentrations of golf courses in Europe it is little wonder that for some the Costa del Sol really is the Costa del Golf.
Just 6km down the road from Marbella you will find Puerto Banus, the most prestigious port in Spain. Whether you will be taking to the water or simply soaking up the atmosphere Puerto Banus is well worth a visit. The impressive yachts will make your jaw drop and there are plenty of up-market restaurants and designer stores to make sure you leave replete in more ways than one. Airport transfers to Puerto Banus from Malaga airport take less than an hour.
At the Western end of the Costa del Sol you’ll find Estepona. Of all the resorts in the area this one especially oozes Spanish charm and character. Originally a fishing village, the cobbled, narrow streets are lined with cafés and tapas bars serving traditional Spanish delicacies. You’ll also find all the usual tourist facilities and shops. Gibraltar Airport is the nearest international airport serving Estepona, however, taxi transfers from Malaga are also convenient taking just over an hour.
At the far end of the Costa del Sol you arrive at British sovereign territory and the rock of Gibraltar. Whether you fly into Gibraltar Airport or Malaga Airport Gibraltar is worth a visit if only to see the rock and the semi-wild Gibraltar apes that reside there. Taxi transfers to Gibraltar from Malaga airport take about an hour and a half.
