Perched high on the cliffs looking out over the Bay of Naples towards Mount Vesuvius, Sorrento is a chic resort town, and an extremely popular summer holiday destination. Sorrento is famous for its production of limoncello; an alcoholic digestif made from lemon rinds. Sorrento is very geared up for tourists. The English have been holidaying here for decades and, whilst the resort is very Italian in flavour, you won’t struggle to find English spoken or more British fare alongside Italian delicacies on the menu. The tourist focal point is Piazza Tasso, the town’s lively main square, which is filled with cafés tables and a perfect vantage point from which to people watch. Sorrento doesn’t have any beaches to speak of, but you can still cool off in the Mediterranean waters via wooden or stone bathing platforms situated at the foot of the cliffs.

Further along the Sorrentine peninsula, you will find a number of other villages such as Massa Lubrense and Sant’Agata where the views are, if it’s possible, even more impressive than Sorrento and the streets are less crowded. Other resorts on the Sorrentine peninsula include Sant’Agnello, situated the Naples side of Sorrento.

Sorrento and its neighbours are all within easy reach of Naples airport with taxi transfer times taking around an hour.

Marina Grand at dusk, Sorrento   The colourful buildings of Positano, Amalfi Coast

Round the headland from Sorrento and you hit the Amalfi Coast. This is a beautiful area with steep hillsides etched with terraces of lemon grove and picturesque towns offering amazing views of this dramatic coastline. It is no surprise that the Amalfi Coast has been listed as a World Heritage Site. The main resort towns on the Amalfi Coast include Maiori, Minori, Ravello, Amalfi and Positano.

Airport taxi transfers to the Amalfi Coast take between 1-1.5 hours from Naples airport.

Heading down the coast the resort and historical towns of Salerno, Paestum, and Santa Maria di Castellabate (to name but a few) are also all within easy reach of Naples airport, with all the above-mentioned resorts within a 2-hour taxi transfer from Naples airport.

North of Naples there are a couple of resorts of note that are a short taxi transfer from Naples airport. Caserta has one of the most impressive medieval towns in southern Italy. Caserta’s main attraction is its Palace, which is listed as a World Heritage Site. Taxi transfers from Naples airport to Caserta take around half an hour. On the coast to the west of Naples, sits Pozzuoli. Probably best known as a point of embarkation for the islands of Capri and Ischia in the bay of Naples, Pozzuoli is also worth a visit in its own right. Unlike other resorts accessed from Naples, Pozzuoli is not really geared up for tourists, which, for some, makes it more attractive than its more popular neighbours down the coast. It is a working port – interesting in itself – but it also has some amazing Roman ruins including the third largest amphitheatre in Italy. Like Caserta, Pozzuoli is about a half hour taxi transfer from Naples airport.

No trip to the region would be complete without an excursion to Pompeii frozen in AD79. This remarkably preserved city – with whole streets, villas and amphitheatres – captures a moment in time usually the preserve of history books. Transfer Intelligence are able to organise your taxi transfer to Pompeii from Naples airport as well as daytrips from your resort.
